London Attractions - Tate Modern
Tate Modern stands at the heart of London , linked to St Paul 's Cathedral by the new millennium footbridge. The building is a remarkable combination of the old and the new. The original Bankside Power Station was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott who was also the architect of Battersea Power Station, the Liverpool Anglican cathedral and the famous British red telephone box.
The gallery houses the Tate's collection of international modern art and new art as it is created including major works by Dalí, Picasso, Matisse, Rothko and Warhol and contemporary pieces by artists such as Dorothy Cross, Gilbert & George and Susan Hiller.
This is defined as art since 1900. International painting pre-1900 is found at the National Gallery, and sculpture at the Victoria & Albert Museum . Tate Modern includes modern British art where it contributes to the story of modern art, so major modern British artists may be found at both Tate Modern and Tate Britain .
Special exhibitions and events take place throughout the year.
