Founded by Act of Parliament, from the collections of Sir Hans Sloane, the British Museum is one of the great museums of the world, showing the works of man from prehistoric to modern times with collections drawn from the whole world. Two million years of world history and civilization are held within the walls of this great museum. It also offers quite a bit of information. 
It was built in 1753 and the Museum's distinctive Greek revivalist structure was built during the 19th century. It covers 14 acres of land with exhibitions and admission free for all.
It is located on the Great Russell Street , London , WC1 and you can reach it by taking the underground train (Tube) to Russell Square off Tottenham Court Road station.
Here you can explore and experience artifacts dating back to prehistoric times to the present. Antiquities from Egypt , Greece , Rome , Western Asia and Great Britain await your curious eyes and mind. Famous objects include the Rosetta Stone, sculptures from the Parthenon, the Sutton Hoo and Mildenhall treasures and the Portland Vase. There is also a programme of special exhibitions and daily gallery tours, talks and guided tours.
The sheer size of the museum (2,5 miles of galleries) suggest to you, to wear a good pair of walking shoes and be prepared to spend most of the day there. Whatever your cup of tea is you will have a memorable day out.
